Overview

The module explores key infection prevention and control concepts, and critically appraises best practices and behaviours. Course content may include the following: Principles of Infection Prevention. Getting evidence into practice. Audit, surveillance and feedback. Behaviour change theory. Behaviour change in practice. Understanding the work setting and managing challenges. Leadership and coaching - leading the way. Championing infection prevention. Quality improvement and best practice.

Course content may include the following:

Introduction to online module 鈥撯渉ow to鈥 guide. Overview. Principles of Infection Prevention. Getting evidence into practice. Audit, surveillance and feedback. Behaviour change theory. Behaviour change in practice. Understanding the work setting and managing challenges. Leadership and coaching - leading the way. Championing infection prevention. Quality improvement and best practice.

Assessment Strategy

Excellent / A Grade: To achieve an 鈥榚xcellent pass鈥 on the module, students will be required to demonstrate a thorough and comprehensive understanding of infection prevention best practices and behaviour, and the ability to critically analyse key topics in considerable depth. This will need to be supported by a comprehensive range of appropriate literature.

Good / B Grade: To achieve a 鈥榞ood pass鈥 on the module, students will be required to demonstrate a broad understanding infection prevention best practices and behaviour, and the ability to explore and analyse key topics in depth. This will need to be supported by a good range of appropriate literature.

Threshold / C Grade: To achieve a 'pass鈥 on the module, students will be required to demonstrate reasonable knowledge and understanding of infection prevention best practices and behaviour, and to demonstrate some evidence of critical analysis. This will need to be supported by appropriate literature.

Learning Outcomes

  • 1. Develop comprehensive knowledge of infection prevention such as epidemiology of infection and antimicrobial resistance, standard precautions, policy, guidance.

  • 2. Show excellence in leadership and interpersonal skills to act as role model and promote behaviour change in the workplace.

  • 3. Apply and critically analyse appropriate behaviour change strategies within the infection prevention domain, which impact positively on patient and population safety from infection.

  • 4. Display a mastery in literature searching skills, show ability to access and critically appraise literature pertaining to infection prevention, leadership and behaviour change.

  • 5. Demonstrate critical reflective skills to show learning and development in own role.

Description

Students will need to write 6 fully referenced academic Blogs relating to a range of issues covered in the module, or linked between the module and practice. These will be submitted on a weekly basis from week 5 of the module through to week 10 of the module, so 6 blogs in total. Each Blog needs to be 500 - 600 words in length. The module learning outcomes will need to have been addressed across the Blogs.
