As well as analysing literature relating to the relationship between people and the environment, ecocriticism has a political aim, which is to deepen our historical understanding of the causes of the current environmental crisis and to strengthen ourselves to resist those who wish to disregard it. In this lecture we will consider the work of some Welsh nineteenth century poets whose lives were transformed by the industrial revolution, and ask if there is a message for us today in their response to the loss of greenery?
