Ms Sophie Higgett
Overview
I am currently undertaking a funded PhD as part of the Wildlife Trusts’ Temperate Rainforest Restoration Programme, in partnership with Aviva. My research focuses on identifying the most effective, ecologically-based methods for woodland restoration to deliver benefits in terms of biodiversity recovery, carbon sequestration and long-term ecosystem resilience.
Previously, I worked as a Natura 2000 Sustainable Management Advisor for Natural Resources Wales, where I supported the recovery of designated sites across Newport, Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent - helping bring priority habitats into favourable condition.
I hold an MSc by Research in Environment from the University of York, where I specialised in mountain ecology, soil science and spatial analysis. Prior to that, I graduated with First Class Honours in Applied Terrestrial and Marine Ecology (BSc) from 91¾«Æ·ºÚÁϳԹÏ, receiving the William Griffith Award from the Department of Natural Sciences.
Personal
I am a qualified Mountain Leader and have led youth expeditions with the British Exploring Society in the UK and Canada, combining science, adventure and environmental stewardship. I enjoy mountain biking in Eryri and the Forest of Dean.
