Dr Taher Hatahet

Overview

I am a Syrian-registered pharmacist who completed a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree at the Arab International University in Syria in 2013. Following the receipt of the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Avempace 2 Award from the EU Commission, I began my PhD at the Institute Charles Gerhardt (ICGM) / University of Montpellier, France. My doctoral research, conducted within the Advanced Materials for Health and Catalysis research team, focused on developing novel lipid-based nanoformulations and nanocrystals for the transdermal delivery of antioxidants.

In 2016, I joined the University of Rennes 1, School of Pharmacy, as a Research and Teaching Fellow, where I worked on polymeric nanoparticles for delivering inorganic photosensitizing agents for the theranostic management of ovarian cancer. In May 2018, I joined Queen’s University Belfast School of Pharmacy as a Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Sciences. In 2023, I was promoted to Senior Lecturer, and in April 2025, I joined 91¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï as a Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Technology, where I lead the pharmaceutics development within the MPharm program.

Qualifications

  • Professional: HEA fellowship
    Advance HE, 2020
  • Professional: The Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching (PGCHET
    Queen's University, Belfast, 2020
  • PhD: PhD in pharmaceutical technology: Comparison of topical quercetin nanoformulations for skin protection
    Université de Montpellier, 2016

Teaching and Supervision

I teach pharmaceutical sciences and technology components within the MPharm program. Additionally, I engage in pedagogical research aimed at enhancing student engagement and learning through various blended learning approaches. My role extends to administrative responsibilities, including serving as the advisor of studies and others.

Research Interests

My research focuses on developing novel nanomaterials for delivering a broad range of therapeutic agents and fabricating multifunctional nanoparticles to target cancer and other diseases. My long-term goal is to facilitate the translation of nanoparticle-based systems from the lab to the clinic using scalable technologies. I am particularly interested in improving the physiochemical properties of poorly water-soluble drugs to enhance their bioavailability through nanotechnology-based formulations.

My current research themes include:

  1. Lipid-based nano-systems for targeted drug delivery to skin tissue

  2. Nanocrystals for poorly water-soluble drugs

  3. Novel topical therapies for skin cancers and inflammatory skin diseases

Postgraduate Project Opportunities

  • Safer, scalable, and modifiable polymer-based lipid nanocapsules for drug delivery
  • Development of antioxidants-based nanoparticles for topical application
  • Development of next-generation nanoparticles loaded hydrogels containing multiple active agents for improved treatment of bacterial infections
  • Development of anti-inflammatory-based nanoparticles for topical treatment of psoriasis
