Miss Emily Phillips

Research Project Support Officer

Overview

I undertook my BSc in Marine Biology at 91¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï from 2018-2021. In 2022 I completed my MSc at Bangor in Marine Environmental Protection with a research project on mark recapture methods to estimate the abundance and pot selectivity of the common whelk (Buccinum undautm).

Since finishing my studies I have been employed as a Research Assistant in the Fisheries team at Bangor under Dr Natalie Hold. My work thus far has been focused on commercial potting fisheries in Wales.

Currently, I work on a Fisheries Industry Science Partnership (FISP) funded project that seeks to further understand the landings composition of brown crab (Cancer pagurus) and European lobster (Homarus gammarus) fisheries. In addition, the project aspires to understand the size structure of crustacean populations through boat surveys and fisher interviews. This research will feed into future fisheries management plans.

Activities

2024

  • Presented at the 2024 Herriot Watt University internal Fisheries Conference.

Presentation blurb: In the last two decades global whelk fisheries have undergone dramatic economic and geographic expansion, yet whelk are classified as data deficient stocks and are inherently vulnerable to overexploitation due to their life history traits. The susceptibility of whelks coupled with limited temporal data and increasing exploitation have led to concerns regarding the sustainability of whelk fisheries. This study estimated the density of the common whelk, Buccinum undatum, using mark recapture methods at six sites across two commercially fished regions in North Wales and investigated the size selectivity of whelk pots. These density estimates and gear size selectivity can be used to inform stock assessments and are crucial for effective fisheries management.
