Overview

Nia is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology and Sports Science at 91¾«Æ·ºÚÁϳԹÏ. She completed her PhD in 2012 at 91¾«Æ·ºÚÁϳԹÏ, and her research focussed on evaluating the effectiveness of an intervention for the parents of toddlers living in the most deprived communities in Wales. Nia holds teaching qualifications including a 91¾«Æ·ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï Teaching Fellowship and is a Senior Fellow of the HEA.

Nia’s PhD was part-funded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and she is part of a team of lecturers who delivers modules, supervision and pastoral support in both Welsh and English in the School of Psychology and Sports Science.

Teaching Interests

Nia is module organiser and lecturer on several of the Welsh-medium undergraduate modules, delivering both formal lectures and small group/practical sessions through the medium of Welsh and bilingually. Nia teaches research methods and statistics in the second year for our BPS accredited courses, as well as a specialist third year module looking at early development, adversity during childhood and the crucial role played by parents and caregivers in child development and wellbeing. Nia supervises Undergraduate students during their research project using both qualitative and quantitative methods.

Research Interests

Nia’s research interests include early childhood experiences including abuse and neglect and how these impact later adult functioning. Recent undergraduate research projects have explored self-reported adverse childhood experiences in the student population and their relationship with wellbeing, anxiety, depression, aggression, executive functioning deficits as well as some protective factors such as social support.

Nia is also a Trustee of the Children’s Early Intervention Trust which is a registered charity that generates funding for research to add to the evidence base for early intervention.

Administrative Duties

Nia holds two administrative posts in the School of Psychology and Sports Science including Director of Undergraduate Studies for all BPS accredited degrees and Admissions Tutor.
