Legal Advice Clinic 2 2024-25

Legal Advice Clinic 2 2024-25
SXL-3156
2024-25
School Of History, Law And Social Sciences
Module - Semester 2
20 credits
Module Organiser: Tracey Horton
Overview

Legal Advice Clinic 1 and Legal Advice Clinic 2 are co-requisite modules and must be chosen together. Students must have taken and passed Legal Advice Clinic 1 to progress to this module in Semester 2.

Key themes of the course include but are not limited to:

  • An opportunity to participate in ‘real’ cases for clients across a range of identified areas of unmet legal need including housing problems, consumer issues, employment and family cases.
  • Through this participation students will be able to develop and apply their theoretical understanding of substantive law, procedure, legal and related skills, and professional values and ethical considerations, in a practical setting.
  • Students will learn through a series of training activities, be live in a clinic meeting, interviewing clients, carrying our practical legal research and preparing a letter of advice for the client. All activities will be supervised by a qualified solicitor.

Initial training will have been provided before engaging in Clinics in Legal Advice Clinic 1. Training will continue during this semester 2 module in a practice setting and will provide students with further opportunity to develop and enhance their skills, insights and personal attributes in legal practice. Some of the legal practice activities will include client interviewing, matter analysis, practical legal research, legal drafting and marketing. This will allow students to apply their research methodologies, professional ethics and behaviour and interdisciplinary approaches in a professional context.

Students must continue to be part in a rota to cover the Legal Advice Clinics. This will provide an opportunity to participate in ‘real’ cases for clients across a range of identified areas of unmet legal need including housing problems, consumer issues, employment and family cases.
